"Fifty years ago five Sisters of Mercy left their convents in Brooklyn to start an exciting innovative plan: to staff a Catholic co-educational high school on the east end of Long Island called Mercy.

In 1956, Sr. Mary Euphrasia, Superior General of the Sisters of Mercy in Brooklyn and Long Island, missioned five Sisters to Riverhead.  Mercy High School opened its doors to welcome its first forty-seven students.

In 2002, a new partnership was created with the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the Sisters of Mercy and in September 2003, Mercy was officially renamed Bishop McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School.  The school continues to cultivate successful students as a tribute to the vision of the Sisters of Mercy."

Mission Statement:
"McGann~Mercy Diocesan High School strives to create a positive environment in which all students are challenged and inspired to achieve their personal best. Our uniquely small Catholic community, with its enriching and supportive environment, has its roots in the religious traditions of the Sisters of Mercy and the Catholic faith and is dedicated to motivating its students to live morally, responsibly, prayerfully, and productively.

McGann~Mercy is committed to the pursuit of excellence and the promotion of service, self respect, and respect for others. By recognizing and allowing for individual differences, the school through its academic programs, athletics and extracurricular activities, and Christian service opportunities, encourages and inspires students to think logically, creatively, and effectively for the benefit of themselves and society."
