Cynthia Scott: Get Involved, Prevent Child Abuse | A Minute Smarter

Cynthia Scott from The Safe Center LI passionately discusses her goal to end child abuse.

Every year, there are more than 16,000 reports of Long Island Children being abused and I want to see those numbers go up!

I'm Cynthia Scott -- Executive Director of The Safe Center LI -- and I don't want more of our precious children to suffer abuse.  But I know that only a fraction of abuse cases are ever reported.  I am asking Long Islanders to help all our abused children.

Doctors, teachers and other professionals are required to report suspicions of abuse and they help identify thousands of local victims.

But what about me and you?

Should we ignore our suspicions simply because we're not required to report them or because we'd prefer not to get involved?

1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18.  Those are the numbers I want to see shrink.  But, until they do, I want to identify each and every abused child so we at the Safe Center LI and others in our field can provide the resource to heal, protect and prevent further abuse. There is no rationale for "minding your own business" when it comes to child abuse. There are no innocent bystanders.
