Suffolk Fire Marshal K-9 "Cinder" Retires, "Jul" Introduced

After ten and a half years of loyal service, Suffolk County Fire Marshal K-9 dog "Cinder" was given a retirement send-off at the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. At the ceremony, the new Arson Detection Canine "Jul" was introduced along with the dog's handler, Suffolk Fire Marshal Brett Martinez.

After ten and a half years of loyal service, Suffolk County Fire Marshal K-9 dog "Cinder" was given a retirement send-off at the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. At the ceremony, the new Arson Detection Canine "Jul" was introduced along with the dog's handler, Suffolk Fire Marshal Brett Martinez.

Suffolk FRES Commissioner Joe Williams introduced the dogs and spoke about the FRES K-9 program to the invited guests that attended from the ATF, Suffolk County Police, Nassau County Fire Marshal and other local fire and law enforcement agencies. Cinder was trained by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and has been deployed over 350 times on cases throughout the county.

 Cinder has also assisted fire marshals in New York City, Nassau County and New York City, and has been utilized in counter-terrorism efforts with the Department of Justice and the New York MTA. Cinder and Jul were acquired by the ATF, which trains and assigns K-9's, from the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown. ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Kevin Kelleher presented a Certificate of Appreciation to K-9 Cinder for his assistance and untiring service.

Major cases Cinder has worked on include arson/homicide fires in Huntington Station, Central Islip, and Moriches, a 1999 serial arson investigation in Selden, a 2000 Earth Liberation (ELF) terrorist case, and the 2001 Kleet Lumber fire in Huntington Station.

The Suffolk County FRES Arson Detection K-9's began service with Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office in 1991 with "Ember," followed by "Cinder" in 1999, LP in 2006 and now Jul. LP's handler is Fire Marshal Don Lynch. Ember, Cinder and now Jul are partnered with Fire Marshal Brett Martinez. Cinder will spend his retirement living with Fire Marshal Martinez's family.
